SHINE YOUR LIGHT: Iconic night stadium photo requires volunteer light painters

 

The Great Pyramids of Giza, Stockholm’s Royal Palace, The Alamo…and now Cowboys Stadium in Arlington! New York’s prestigious Rochester Institute of Technology has taken iconic night time photographs of landmarks around the worl.

And now RIT needs Arlington residents’ help in illuminating the exterior of Cowboys Stadium with handheld flashlights or camera flashes the evening of Saturday, March 23. You can volunteer for the “2013 RIT Big Shot at Cowboys Stadium” and be part of history with the goal of creating a new category for the Guinness World Book of Records.

 “The Big Shot” is described as ‘painting with light’ during a long-exposure photograph.

The Big Shot is put on by the Rochester (New York) Institute of Technology’s School of Photographic Arts & Science and the RIT Office of Alumni Relations. They need our help ‘painting’ the darkened stadium with handheld lights/flashes. Our lights, plus the long exposure photography, will give a darkened Cowboys Stadium a mesmerizing glow.

Organizers say they need at least 5,000 volunteers with flashlights and camera flashes for the night-time photo shoot (please wear dark clothes and comfortable shoes to the event, and bring your own flashlight or camera flashes). The organizers are hoping that between 10,000 and 20,000 volunteers register. More people with lights/flashes makes for an even better photo, so this is truly a case of ‘the more, the merrier’.

If you volunteer, you’ll be outside the stadium in the parking lot. You won’t shine your light or flash directly at the stadium’s glass exterior (‘skin’); instead, you’ll be lighting the ground in the parking lot, etc.

You don’t have to be a Cowboys fan or have a background in photography to take part in this fun volunteer opportunity. You just have to be willing to hang out in the stadium parking lot on a Saturday night (March 23rd) shining a light/flash while the photographer takes the long exposure photo.

Volunteers will not be paid, but will receive a digital copy of the photograph as well as the option to purchase a Big Shot t-shirt.

Here’s what you need to know if volunteering:
*Please arrive by 7:30pm to allow enough time for everyone to be broken into teams.
*Attire: Participants must wear black or dark clothing and bring a flashlight or hand held strobe. We suggest wearing comfortable shoes as you may be standing for long periods of time.
*Use of laser pointers is prohibited and will result in removal from the event.
