This weekend’s lineup of free headliner concerts
(yes, the concerts really are free) at the Levitt Pavilion in downtown
Arlington includes Indie rockers the Band of Heathens (top left), classical
pianist Danny Wright (lower left), reggae rockers Watusi (lower right) and boot
scooter Johnny Rodriguez (upper right).
That’s clearly something for everybody.
Band of Heathens is most often compared to Black
Crowes, the Band and Little Feat. But Indie
rockers Band of Heathenshave evolved into their
own with a new album last year that
landed on the Americana Top 10 Albums of the
Year list (their third album in a row
to do so). They make their second appearance at
the Levitt Pavilion at 7:30 p.m.
Friday.
Their performance is sponsored by the
Star-Telegram. The guys in Band of
Heathens are fond of saying they became a unit
by accident. Unplanned, maybe, but
hardly random. The merger of singers,
songwriters and multi-instrumentalists from
their respective solo careers and bands offers
evidence that they were meant to
be together and have evolved into a solid
musical entity.
The Levitt's second week of free concerts is one
of its most diverse for the fall
concert series. At the other end of the music
spectrum from Band of Heathens is
classically trained pianist and area favorite
Danny Wright.Seated at a baby grand,
Danny performs original compositions with
influences that include contemporary jazz
and classical.
He also performs his own arrangements of
Broadway and film classics
and has appeared in top venues from Boston's
Berklee Performance Center to Schoenburg
Hall in Los Angeles. Earlier this year, Danny
released Soul 2 Soul, his first album
of all-original compositions in 11 years with
songs inspired by the heartfelt stories
of his fans and friends. Danny's concert is 7:30
p.m. Sunday, presented by Pianotex.
The concert weekend begins with an island vibe
with Watusi at 7:30 p.m. Thursday,
sponsored by J. Gilligan's. Watusi is
distinguished as a charter member of Reggae
Ambassadors Worldwide and one of the first and
most established reggae bands in
America. They have been honored with numerous
reggae and world music awards for
their unique blend of roots, dancehall reggae
and world beat music delivered by
a tribe of world musicians from the Caribbean,
United States and Africa.
For those who like to scoot their boots on a
Saturday night, the Levitt is honored
to welcome Texas native son and member of the
Texas Country Music Hall of Fame,
Johnny Rodriguez, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Johnny
has recorded 35 albums and charted
45 singles, and has earned standing ovations for
his classic country music from
Ryman Auditorium to Carnegie Hall. Johnny also
has been recognized for his
Contributions in bringing the Hispanic
communities and country music together with his bilingualsongs. His concert is
sponsored by Southwest Bank.
